The Original Bottle Rocket

I love Wes Anderson. His films were something my old manager Zausch and I found in common and helped make us good friends. Bottle Rocket has always held this sweet place in my heart. When I first saw it I had no idea who Wes Anderson was, all I knew is that it was a hilarious story of wannabe criminals that felt like the sort of film my friends and I would make if we ever put our minds to it.

Truely Digital Camcorders

Now that part of my new life will involve shooting a lot more video, videocameras are demanding a larger share of my attention. In case any of you hadn't figured it out by now, linear storage models are going the way of the videogame cartridge. Cast your gaze across the electronic landscape and what do you see? Answering machines: If anyone hasn't offloaded this task to a hosted service, then the box on their desk is using RAM. Music and videos: CD/DVD, iTMS, and BitTorrent are all digital delivery methods, and that's leaving out all the nex-gen malarkey.

Why then are Kevin Smith and George Lucas the only guys who actually care about putting an end to all this film? I know the argument for the superior quality of film, but all those advantages are on ticking clocks, and the sooner people move on is the quicker the digital world evolves.

Eric is on his way to getting his hands on the beautiful Sony DCR-SR100, which will record 7 hours of DVD-quality video onto it's 30GB drive! That should have people throwing their MiniDV cameras out the window, "Seven hours and I don't have to stop for anything but batteries? Ring me up Selley-I'll take seven!" If that weren't enough, the thing will shot 3 megapixel stills and it's got USB 2, so the cats at Make are bound to find a way to extend the camera's storage without a computer.

The other piece to this puzzle is whether now is the right time to start shooting in HD. While Sony is trying to maintain some sort of market lead with things like the HDR-HC3, that sort of price point is is slamming its head against the ceiling. Plus it goes against our first rule: It runs on tape. If you can do without 1080i, and honestly I think I can, then the Sanyo HD1 is the business. It fits in the palm of your hand (perfect for concert bootlegging), has a 2 inch OLED display to preserve your precious battery life, and records 40 minutes of 720p on 2GB of SD!

The early adopter in me is jumping on his bed like a nutter, and even though I know that in another product cycle I'll get 1080i recording straight to a 30GB drive, I so desperately want to piss away my first paycheck on one of these.

I think we'll put aside the fact that such a contraption is what most people would call a fixed cost and instead ponder this: When electrically charging paint, isn't it best to leave that to professionals and focus on repainting your friend's car to resemble that of the Joker's henchmen?

Most of you probably, no actually, I'm certain that you all absolutely loved the video of Monzel and I going down Adobe Creek. While I was down in the valley last weekend we did some scouting on the San Francisquito, which should be glorious when Monzel and our other recruits ride it this month. He sent out the scenario report, and it made me a bit sad that I would be missing out.

Well the sun did shine up here today on my way home from work. I decided to try a new route, and what did I find--The beautiful Juanita Creek! Keep in mind, down in the valley suburban urban rafting only has a small window within which the water levels are high enough. Up here in Washington though, hell, these guys invented rain.

Sony has let their big black cat out of the bag. I think it's hilarious that after their nonsense boomerang controller concept, they reverted to decade-old design for the PS3. It's nice to know that when presented with an opportunity to improve on product design, Sony would rather...

Also interesting is the fact that they have removed the Dual-Shock force-feedback technology from the controller, replacing it with motion detectors. There was some bad press a while back about Dual-Shock, but when your competitors are doing at least force-feedback, if not that plus motion detection...

The crema here though has got to be the little nugget of letdown in the spec sheet (PDF) on the SCEI Japan site. The elements that are left out of the ~~entry level~~ $500 platform are the MemoryStick/SD/CF reader, 802.11 b/g connectivity, and HDMI output. So three simple steps to a lower-priced console: Take out in-house interoperability, ease-of-use network interfaces, and futureproofing output compatibility...

Anticompetitive Innovation in Vista

CNET this morning is covering a Yankee Group report (Report: Vista to hit anti-spyware, firewall markets) supposedly hitting desks today that addresses the potential effects Vista will have on the market for Windows security software. "Yankee Group expects Vista to significantly shrink the aftermarket for antispyware and desktop firewalls," says Andrew Jaquith in the report. The article goes on to address the difference between security and antivirus software, as Windows Live OneCare will be sold as a seperate product and not bundled with Vista.

The fun starts over at Techdirt, where Mike reminds us of a question they asked almost a year ago (Caught Between Bad Security And Antitrust Questions):

However, late last week, the company began to talk about how it would offer a complete security package for a fee... leading some to mock the company for causing the pain in the first place, and then selling the solution. Of course, the situation might not be that simple. Given Microsoft's trouble in the past with anti-trust violations, it's easy to see how Microsoft could then be accused of using its monopoly position in operating systems to wipe out the desktop security business.

In this morning's post (Will Vista Decimate Third Party Security Sales? Is That An Antitrust Issue?), Mike tells of how this shouldn't worry anyone, as Microsoft doesn't ship squeeky-clean code:

If Microsoft is including all this security software in their operating system, do they get accused of antitrust violations for "bundling" this security software with the operating system? After all, isn't that what they're repeatedly accused of doing with things like Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player? Of course, this seems a bit absurd when you think about it. Would the same accusations hold in a fantasy world where Microsoft produced perfectly secure code (remember, I said a fantasy world)? It would seem like the act of making their products secure would leverage their monopoly power to suppress a thriving industry in security software...

This whole thing smacks of Lessig's article in the latest issue of Wired, which addresses the danger of preserving inefficiency in government. He tells an amazing story about California's tax experiement (Wired 14.05: Posts - Crushing Competiton):

In 2005, the state of California conducted an experiment. Hoping to make paying taxes easier, it launched a pilot program for people who were likely to file "simple returns." The state already had the payroll information some taxpayers needed to file their returns, so it filled out 50,000 of those forms for them. Way in advance of the filing deadline, the state mailed the taxpayers their completed ReadyReturns. Like a Visa statement, the ReadyReturn itemized the taxes due, making the process easier for the taxpayer and more accurate for the government. People could either file the ReadyReturn or use the information to fill out forms on their own. Of taxpayers who hadn't yet filed, 30 percent used the return; more than 95 percent of that group said they would do so again. Praise for the program was generally over-the-top.
Soon after ReadyReturn was launched, lobbyists from the tax-preparation industry began to pressure California lawmakers to abandon the innovation. Their opposition was not surprising: If figuring out your taxes were easy, why would anyone bother to hire H&R Block? If the government sends you a completed form, why buy TurboTax?

The conclusion of Lessig's article is exactly the point for anyone who has concerns about Vista's security software:

And efficiency is good regardless of who it might hurt; it is especially good if it hurts those who feed off inefficiency. Thus, lawyers are good, but a world that needed fewer of them would be much better. Doctors are great, but that's no argument against better health. And TurboTax is fantastic, but it shouldn't prevent the government from making paying taxes easier.

So there it is. For those of you keeping score at home, yes it is much easier to write astute posts when rely on excerpts from professional journalists and Stanford law professors ;)

Secret Machines at the Independent

I've never been more happy about having a headache than this morning. After flying down to Cali on Friday evening, there was plenty to take in. Los Charros on Cinco De Mayo was a circus, Pat Neal should soon be released from his D.O.D. contract, and MI:3 was a Tom Cruisathon like no other. By far though the most important part of this past weekend's journey was the Secret Machines show in San Francisco.

They melted the walls at the Independent, and impressed me so much that I've already got tickets to see them again tonight at Neumos in Seattle! While I wait for another chance to hear Rock as it was meant to be played, take a look at the photos from Saturday.

The Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD. Lucasfilm has finally seen the light-letting George constantly revise the Holy Trilogy isn't the best idea. The discs go on sale September 12th and will include the 2004 remastered ediitons as well as the original theatrical versions. The only downer is that the theatrical editions are filed under 'bonus material', but at least I can finally throw out my VHS copies!

Deli Day: Alternative Uses of a Friday

Picture yourself waking up this past Friday. It's around 8am and already it has the makings to be one of those immaculate California days that drives up our property values. The kind of day that gives you the urgent impression that something great must be found to take full advantage of such a fantastic moment in time. Below is a list of things one might consider doing with such an opportunity:

-Fly a kite on the beach in Half Moon Bay
-Unleash your bicycle on a sun-dappled ride over Skyline
-Mix a handful of stiff drinks and grill up some dead animals
-Oil up and get a headstart on the tan of the season
-Feast on ballpark food while booing whoever's playing the A's
-Launch the convertible at Yosemite for dinner at the Ahwahnee
-Hop a plane to Las Vegas with nothing but a load of cash

As you can see, this sort of list could go on for quite a while, particularly when you are able to invest the entire day in any of these ideas. Well Jon and I already had an idea (on the back burner for a while now), and due in some part to me skipping town the next day, we had to put it into action.

Thus Deli Day came to fruition, and believe me it was everything we had hoped it would be. From the time we sat down at 9am to our final departure at 3pm, Jon and I split sandwiches, leered at townies, cursed the local journalism, and toasted ourselves for finding such a peerless use of one of my last days in the valley.

So this Spring stands to be the most exciting season on record. Lots of updates coming soon, and I'll be sure to deail them as they happen. The most important however, is an ongoing campaign that bears mention right nowt. I don't have a lot of time to explain it at the moment, and if I were to attempt to answer all the questions, I'd be stuck at this keyboard all night. So instead of that, here are the bullet points: -I'm leaving Apple...for Microsoft. -I'm leaving California...for Washington. I know, that information really just creates more questions than it answers (kinda like an episode of Lost). That's right, we're here, reporting live from the Independent in ass-cold San Francisco. We've come here tonight for a very special performance by the LA-MV district's favorite Detroit Disco-Rock ensemble Electric Six. Tonight's engagement has sentimental value for a lot of people, as it was at this same venue one year ago that Dick Valentine and his van of merry men won the hearts and minds of so many impressionable young people; people looking for little more than someone to shout ridiculous lyrical genius and wave his hands wildly. Electric Six has managed to grow a significant fanbase since their last west coast flourish, like Bob Dylan or Hitler before them. Some have come to try and recapture the magic they experienced so long ago. Others are here because their hipster friends mentioned the show, only to point out how uninterested they were. Most have come however, seeking answers. Is Jack White the guest vocalist on their first single Fire! In The Disco? What has become of the Rock n' Roll Indian? When will the brilliant sophomore effort Senor Smoke finally punch through this administration's embargos? We'll be here to watch as these questions get some motherfucking answers. In all seriousness however, while I'm not convinced we're going to get kids in Kinshasa blogging anytime soon, we should at least find a way to get tech like this little green machine into some hands that don't have any other way of expressing themselves to the outside world.

The ELastolite: This flexible washable sheet of light looks fantastic, something Monzel and I have been dying to get our hands on in order to revolutionize snowboarding gloves. The age of Tron is upon us!

Last but certainly not least, there's the swag. The contents do look diverse and exciting, but honestly I'm more interested in the bag itself. Timbuk2 created a recyclable bag for everyone to tote around their goodies, and I really really want one. Well really two; one to use and one to recycle ;)

I'm not writing to call anyone out in particular (least of all Julie), but how do the people I know find their way to such terrible software. I suppose if I did more soapboxing here about the things I love on the internet(s) then I could rest easier, knowing I had done my best to help the people around me make software choices.

Goddamned Snapfish. If viewing these photos doesn't require any payment, then why must I have an account with you (and your HP overlords) to look at something hosted on your site? Is your business model really rooted in a pissing contest over the size of your user base? What do you stand to gain by preventing the general public from viewing photos hosted on your site?

I'm sure that if I create an account you'll try to lure me into ordering calendars or t-shirts or Cambodian interpretive place-mats, all adorned with my favorite images from your site. These are all potentially lucrative opportunities for you, but have you considered what is perhaps the ultimate Hollywood instance of this sort of hucksterism:

Picture a Jewish comic genius, big fake ears, sprayed with gold paint, pointy shoes on his knees, waddling around a cave: "Space Balls the FLAMETHROWER!!!" That's the sort of business you're running here.

Unless of course I'm wrong. Maybe you've managed to keep some insanely great features hidden from the world, and you only make them available to your users. I doubt it, as I'm sure if you had real value to offer, that would be mentioned somewhere on this invitation.

Pat Neal is a Phoenix

More than a few of us out here felt that when my close friend Pat left us for the .mil, we had watched one of our best and brightest drop off the grid. Boot camp took forever, and when he came home for the holidays it was fantastic but short-lived, before Georgia swallowed him back for Officer Candidate School.

So imagine my shock and joy at waking up this morning and seeing his ridiculous buddy icon on my display! From the sound of things, OCS will allow him a bit more contact with the outside world.

His mentioning a previous post of mine about new summer threads, it makes me rest a bit easier about the likelyhood of him coming out of this close to the same old flavor of awesome we all know. Thanks man, you're rising from the ashes slowly but surely (hence the whole Phoenix thing).

Jenny's 21st birthday extravaganza

My good friend Jenny turned 21 yesterday, so naturally I had to roll out and celebrate with her. We started at Nola's in downtown Paly, which had no shortage of entertainment.

A solid group of ladies (and their requisite hanger-on boys) turned out to help usher Jenny into full-blown adulthood. I had only met one of them before that night when Jenny roomed with her last year at SCU.

The drinking was hot and heavy, though I was able to abstain from straws and beads and puckered faces. Hiding behind my lens proved a successful strategy for staying sober.

I convinced the group to evac from what was becoming a capacity crowd at Nola's. I enticed them with stories of a magic fairy and some friends who serve alchohol, and so we ventured down the block.

We stumbled into another birthday party at Hukilau, complete with a band for us to embarrass ourselves with. My main man Alan hooked up the pitcher, which was quickly spread across the table with grace.

Before I could really measure the level of inebriation of our group, the sake-bomb fairy had produced a special present for Jenny and the rest of us. Who were we to turn down such a gift?

Once the birthday girl started looking for alternative beverages, it was clear that I needed to help them move along (I've got a rep to uphold with my man Alan!) The girls claimed to need dancing, so it was off to Blue Chalk

As the group queued up to pay their dancing toll, some of them didn't seem like they would survive very much of the hip-hop drizzling out from the gates of Blue Chalk.

As I said goodbye and promised that Jenny and I would indeed go out with Jenny again, as we now live so close together. I wished her a happy birthday and caught once last glimpse of the big smiles.

New Hair

On Monday night I decided to whack all my hairs off a quarter-inch from my head. I always get antsy before a road trip (more on that later) and I had been meaning to do this for a while. Well this sure licks the llama's ass. Here lies the body of Mailblocks, a great email service. it was clean and standards-based. It used a simple and effective challenge/response system to ensure that SPAM never saw the inside of an inbox. It gave us, its users, the opportunity to reject future email from anyone who we had 'trusted' in the past.

Then AOL bought it, and we all began to sweat. "They're not to be trusted," people would say. "They're a dinosaur...they're completely proprietary...they tried to kill my grandparents..." But Mailblocks kept on uninterrupted, disproving our fears.

Now however, our fears have been realized. The Hawaiian traitor and his team have decided that we do not want our fabulous email service. Instead, we clearly want to transfer our account into the AOL universe. Obviously we would rather tie our AIM screen names and email addresses together, under one cute little umbrella of banner ad-riddled disposable teenage pop culture where 3vry 1 sp3k5 txt.

Well I say to fuck with that. Time to send out the vcard update...

Well some circus animal in the UK has built a purse with electroluminescent lining, so at least now Elizabeth's pile of modern female essentials will be slightly easier to root through.

On Friday night I did something tremendously stupid; I made Elizabeth cry. I was leaving for home after delivering her back to UCLA, and instead of enjoying our last goodbye with kisses and promises to talk later that night, I leaned against my car and glared at her, barely speaking. She did her best to engage me, attempting to understand why I was so upset. She asked questions punctuated by wiping tears from her face and breathing in choked-up gasps. I answered with hollow sentence fragments, emotionless and void of compassion. She sat in front of her new apartment building to watch me drive away, but I insisted she leave first. I honked my horn twice, some feeble attempt at a goodbye, but she had already passed through the complex gate. She was gone, and I had driven her away.

There can be little doubt that I am a harsh, callous, and demonstrably mean person. The lion share of humanity pisses me off in one way or another, and it is only the select few who I keep close to me that are immune from judgement. The same idosyncracies don't bother me when observed in the members of my inner circle. My immediate family are the only three people on the planet for whom I have stronger feelings than her; she outranks my grandparents. From our first kiss I have promised her that barring a swerve into alcoholic two-timing kleptomania, she can do absolutely nothing to disappoint me.

Two nights ago, I failed to keep that promise, and I made Elizabeth suffer for it.

Maybe I was pissed off at our failed dinner plans. Or the ticket I got for parking on the street overnight (something that was entirely my responsibility, no matter how much I wanted her to know where Jesse should park Jesse's car). Whatever bullshit excuse I create, nothing stands up against the base expectation of the way she deserves to be treated, particularly on our last night together for probably a month.

The real stink of it was that all of my loathsome attitude evaporated after fifteen minutes on the road. Had I excused myself from dinner and gone to the restroom, I could've slapped myself around, pounded my head into the steel toilet stall door, and figured out that I was spending the last hour with the girl I love, who is nothing but nuts for me, like it was a dinner with my parents over a shitty report card.

I argued with myself over calling her from the road for over an hour. I wanted desperately to go back and undo everything I had just done. I wanted to throw myself in front of her building like Cusak with a ghetto blaster over his head. Love, I get so lost, sometimes...

I'm so sorry Elizabeth. I was childish and agitated and stupid, and not a single angstrom of what I did was your fault. You deserve better in my hands, and I swear I want nothing more from you than the opportunity to make it right."

We haven't spoken since Friday night and it's driving me insane. I sent her a couple texts yesterday but got no response. I've watched her away messages, frantically searching for signs of hope. I pull my phone from my pocket every ten minutes, praying to find a missed call. I have that feeling in my stomach like I've been dumped and can't let go. Thom Yorke keeps yelling, his voice echoing in my head. You did it to yourself, and that's what really hurts is you did it to yourself just you, you and no one else...
